I love the Coen Brothers. I will go see any movie they make, because I know it will be worth my while. In my opinion, they have the Midas touch for movies.
Which is why, when I heard they were remaking True Grit, I did not immediately think it was the worst idea in the history of the world. If any OTHER writers/producers/directors attempted to remake the classic film, I would have condemned it from the start. As far as I'm concerned, you don't remake John Wayne movies. You don't touch them with a 100 foot pole. But, because of my love for the Coen Brothers, I thought "hmm...they might actually pull this off."
And they totally did. Clint and I went to see True Grit a month ago and we were NOT disappointed. In fact, I think the acting was even better than in the original version. Probably because they knew a large portion of the population was going to give them hell for trying to remake a classic, so they needed to step up their game. My favorite part? The girl, Mattie Ross. In the original version, the girl is absolutely obnoxious...everything about her just rubs me the wrong way. I totally understand that she is MEANT to be obnoxious, but this is beyond the intentional acting. I'm pretty sure it was just her personality shining through. This other actress, however, is stellar. She had just the right touch of obnoxious, pretentious, and precocious.
And honestly, I think my favorite roles that Matt Damon plays are the d-bags. I couldn't care less to see him as the hero or badass. I just want to see him in a role I can hate. He captures my attention better that way.
Anyway. My basic point here is this: Go see True Grit. Even if you're holding out because you think you won't like it, or never will like it as much as the original...go see it. It's totally worth your while. And while you're at it, rent Fargo, Raising Arizona, and O Brother Where Art Thou...just for funsies.

I totally agree with you! I was a bit hesitant to go see it, but told myself not to compare it to the original. I definitely think Mattie Ross in this version was stellar compared to the original. That girl has some acting ability!
ReplyDeleteAnd, truly, Jeff Bridges plays a heckuva drunk.
