It is fair time here in Siskiyou County, and let me tell you...I AM EXCITED. I love county fairs. Probably more than most people, or more than most care to admit, but when have I been shy about my embarrassing guilty pleasures? NEVER.
I love the food, the people, the carnival, the people who come out of the woodwork, the animals, the exhibits, the concerts, and the people. In fact, you know how a lot of small towns pride themselves on a great Homecoming Week in the fall, when all the alumni of high schools and colleges actually return to the town like a pseudo-reunion? Yeah, that is how fair week happens here. I think it is safe to say that fair week IS our Homecoming in these parts. Most of the YHS high school reunions are scheduled during, or near, this particular week.
No joke, you are pretty much guaranteed to run into 90% of your graduating class at the fair, especially if you venture near the beer booth. Ohhhhh, the beer booth. Such a source of entertainment. My BFF, Katie, and I have been hanging out at the beer booth on Saturday night of the fair since we were about 16...not because we were drinking but because her parents can ALWAYS be found at the tree by the beer booth. I kid you not, last year I was at the fair for the first time in 4 years, and I still found her parents at the tree by the beer booth. It's like a law of nature or something.
Since I was very young, the fair has been what I have looked forward to all summer long. My cousins and I used to sit around on our lazy summer days at my Grandma's house and talk about the rides, the food, and how we planned to spend the 5 days of glorious fair time. Remember that, Jake and Kate? Confession time: I found myself doing that again this summer.
So, tomorrow night I am letting the kid in me loose! I will head in to the Siskiyou Golden Fair with my husband to meet my BFF Katie and I hope it'll be like we're 16 again. Except better. Instead of our older brothers' classmates being home for the fair it will be our classmates we catch up with. And I will have my husband, my oh-so-handsome husband, to show off. And I will have new, awesome friends to introduce to the awesomeness. Many of my favorite people will be together in the same place for a night, and that makes my heart very happy.
Hope to see you there!
